What is a Switchgear?
It’s a general term used for a variety of switches, circuit breakers, fuses, and many more. These are mainly used to regulate and switch the electrical circuit on or off hereby controlling the electric power supply system.
There are Three Types of Electrical Switchgear Depending Upon the Voltage:
- Low Voltage Switchgear
- Medium Voltage switchgear
- High voltage switchgear
While low voltage switchgear can be installed within a building either with or without insulation but high voltage switchgear mandatorily has to be externally installed with insulation.
Low Voltage Switchgear
Today we are going to talk about low voltage switchgear. This type of switchgear is designed and manufactured to provide advanced power monitoring and control. So Basically switchgear with a voltage rating of less than 1kilovolt is called low voltage switchgear. Used mainly for the safe and proper functioning of electrical systems by isolating the faulty electrical supply of current. Safety being paramount for every type of organization, it’s not something we should compromise with, hence switchgear should always be installed in our electrical system. If you’re worried that switchgear will dampen or hamper your existing electrical system setup you’re wrong, the whole idea of switchgear is that they are always connected to the electric circuit but they operate only when there is an anomaly in the electricity supply system not always. So the daily operations are not getting disturbed and hence switchgear is also called the silent lifesaver. There are several types of switchgear like circuit breakers or isolators or fuses and are also divided among several components, some of which I discussed below.
A Low Voltage Switchgear has Three Main Parts:
- Breaker Compartment
Four Vertically aligned circuit breakers are put together inside the enclosure and then assorted within.
- Bus Compartments
Just behind the enclosure housing, breaker components are placed. Each of these bus compartments is also solidly insulated.
- Cable Compartment
These compartments are installed at the rear of the switchgear and can be also be vented or unvented with the use of barriers.
Types of Low Voltage Switchgear
- Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs).
It’s an electric device, which is designed to protect the circuit from overloading.
Usually used in establishments where adjustable tripping is required. These types of establishments are not our typical homes but they are factories, big offices, or commercial establishments. The mccbs are needed for the safe operation of high-power drawing appliances. The most notable feature of mccb being that it has two types of arrangements, one for over-temperature type and another for over current type depending upon the type of situations they are needed for.
-
ABB MCCB 25kA₹2,605 – ₹3,531
-
Siemens Sentron MCCB 25kA₹5,603 – ₹12,834
-
L&T Exora MCCB DY 10kA₹1,732 – ₹11,440
- Insulated Case Circuit Breaker
Similar to mccbs with one key difference. This type of switchgear uses a glass-reinforced insulation system like fiberglass instead of traditional materials used in mccbs for the added dielectric strength. While its push to open button system and rotary or ratchet operated low torque handle provides quick connection/disconnection but it’s the independent spring charged precision system which does the job.
- Power Circuit Breakers
Used mostly in heavy power establishments, this type of circuit breaker uses a spring coil mechanism system with electricity framework ratings between 400 amperes to 4000 amperes, but can be customized to work till 5000 or up to 6000 amperes of electrical load hence the name power circuit breakers. They offer a large breadth of capabilities in a compact yet flexible design solution that just works hence providing peace of mind for its users against any kind of electrical accident.
