Continue reading to find out more.

How do Halogens Work?

As tungsten filament and halogen gas are mixed, a chemical process known as the halogen cycle occurs. The vaporised tungsten then forms a halide – a product made up of two elements – with the halogen gas resulting from this reaction. The halide splits off and releases tungsten back into the filament as it hits a high enough temperature, increasing the lamp’s lifespan. The filament is accumulated on the glass bulb’s interior in a regular incandescent lamp, decreasing its brightness over time.

Types of Halogen Bulbs & Their Uses

Mains-Voltage Halogen Spotlights: Because of the wide range of products available, halogen is one of the most used technologies in spotlighting. Its excellent colour representation is another explanation for its success. A halogen bulb emits light that contains all the visible spectrum colours, allowing for more consistent colour exposure than LED or fluorescent technologies.

The most popular type of mains-voltage halogen reflector is the GU10 spotlight. Emphasis lighting, task lighting, and ambient lighting are all examples of its implementations.

Low Voltage Halogen Spotlights: Halogen AR111 spotlights are widely used in stores and showrooms, and their filaments are typically shielded with a metal block to avoid glare. The hugely successful MR16 is adored by everyone, thanks to its wide range of designs and beam angles.

Low-voltage spotlights come with either an aluminium-coated reflector that directs infrared heat outward or a dichroic filter that permits infrared heat to pass through the lamp’s back. As a result, a dichroic spotlight may be used to display heat-sensitive things such as food, artwork, or textiles.

Linear Halogens: Floodlighting and surveillance lights use linear halogen lights with R7S bases. The lamp’s filament is held across its length, and the rounded supports on either end of the lamp fit into sprung brushes. To sustain the bulb’s longevity, the filament must stay horizontally, as says the name.

Capsules: Caravan, cruise, pelmet, and desk lighting all use halogen capsules. They are available in G4 or GY6.35 low-voltage or G9 mains-voltage formats. The appended numbers in their names refer to the length between their two pin cores in millimetres.

The G9 is the smallest mains-voltage halogen bulb around, and it’s commonly used in small lighting fixtures because it doesn’t need a 12V transformer.

For applications such as theatre, TV, movie, or projector lighting, high-powered specialised halogen capsules are also accessible.

Halogen Lamps: Importance and Benefits in Daily Life https://www.ampkart.com/halogen-lamps-importance-and-benefits-in-daily-life/ Sat, 27 Feb 2021 08:42:11 +0000 https://www.ampkart.com/?p=13048 Halogen lamps have different uses in your day-to-day life. They are used for outdoor lighting, stage lighting, flood lights and auto-mobiles. They are also used in lamps and mini slide projectors for projection. There are a lot of benefits to halogen lamps.

They are affordable, have a longer time span than conventional light systems and provide a greater range of color temperatures. There is no mercury in them, rendering them non-hazardous and safe for use. Also, they are lightweight and compact in scale. Halogen lamps are also called halogen quartz lamps.

Halogen lamps are available in different shapes and sizes, with the double ended halogen lamps being the most common kind. These styles are more efficient and are used in film production sets, yards, and other types of outdoor lighting for lighting. The single ended halogen lamp is the other kind.

The advanced variant of incandescent lamps is known to be halogen lamps and one of the reasons why they are favored over incandescent lamps is that they light up immediately, unlike incandescent lamps that light up in a few seconds. For home and commercial lighting purposes, halogen lamps are used not only in outdoor lighting, but also in indoor lighting.

Advantages of Halogen Lamps

  • Longevity-Halogen lights last longer as they are connected directly to the power source and are advanced incandescent light bulbs. This vapor is re-deposited on the filament if the temperature is high enough, recycling the tungsten and extending the lifespan of the bulb.
  • Brightness-Halogen lamps are brighter and create more light while burning for a long time per unit energy, which is not present in prevalent incandescent light bulbs.
  • Development & Utility-Small, lightweight and easy to carry halogen bulbs are easy to manufacture.
  • Service: A normal incandescent light can last up to 1000 hours, whereas over 2500 hours can last for a halogen light. Longer service is provided by Halogens.
  • NO WARMUP REQUIRED- Some of the incandescent lights and lamps need to warm up, which is not the case for halogen bulbs.

Uses of Halogen Lamps

  • Halogen lamps have both domestic and industrial applications. In cars, they are used as headlights. Halogen floodlights are also made for industrial and recreational use, both for outdoor lighting systems and for watercraft.
  • In infrared spectroscopy, tungsten-halogen lamps are commonly used as a near-infrared source of light.
  • For inspection lights and microscope stage illuminators, halogen lamps are also used. For early flat-screen LCD backlighting, halogen lamps were used, but other lamp types are now used.
  • The heating elements in halogen furnaces and ceramic cooktops are halogen lamps. Halogen lamp arrays with low wattage are commonly used by monitor lizard keepers.

What is Halogen Lamps & Fittings Really All About? https://www.ampkart.com/what-is-halogen-lamps-fittings-really-all-about/ Wed, 10 Feb 2021 11:09:04 +0000 https://www.ampkart.com/?p=12881 What is a Halogen Lamp?

A halogen lamp, also known as quartz halogen and tungsten filament lamp in technical terms. First discovered by Philips when they were trying to make a better type of incandescent lamp. So halogen lamps are quite similar to incandescent lamps in a way. It has a tungsten filament which is the same as the one used in incandescent lamps but contains one key element different, which is halogen gas. Due to the usage of halogen gas, which in itself boils from liquid to gas at very low temperatures (thereby easy to produce), the glass has to be made with such materials such as being able to withstand the high pressure, preferably fused quartz or silica or aluminosilicate type glass.

Why Halogen Lamps?

Halogen lamps are the better lot than traditional incandescent lamps in many ways than explainable but here are some key points:

  • Saves a lot of money in the long run. Halogen lamps have a much higher life span than incandescent lamps thereby eliminating the need for replacing them frequently.
  • Customization Options:

Halogen lamps unlike incandescent lamps can be customized according to the brightness needs of the customers. Starting from Zero to up to 100% of brightness levels.

  • Colour Rendering:

Halogen lamps have excellent colour rendering capabilities with a higher quality of light emitted than incandescent lamps.

  • Lastly, Halogen lamps can save up a lot of precious space due to their compact nature and ease of usability.

A Proven Technology, halogen lamps, and fittings have been around since the 1950s but were originally very costly and heavy until now. Now halogen lamps are very popular and used in a wide variety of applications ranging from general street lighting solutions to car headlamps to floodlights. Halogen lamps are even used in stadium and race track lighting systems. They can even be customized and manufactured in many shapes and sizes much easier than before, including miniature sizes. Halogen lamps are often also used as display lamps in retail showrooms because of their ability to render every possible colour in the spectrum(up to 100).

With mass scale adoption of halogen lamps, now everyone can make their lighting system more cost-effective and energy-efficient than before. The electricity bill is the biggest expense factor for any business organization or household too. Halogen lamps can save up to 30% more energy consumption than traditional incandescent lamps but this is short term solution to a long-term problem, led lights are still the best solution for cost-saving purposes. Led or light-emitting diode technology is a newer technology than halogen but the initial capital needed to use led instead of halogen is very high and also special fittings will have to be bought separately unlike halogen which can be fitted in any incandescent lamps holder for its the same configuration like normal bulb namely Edison screw cap, bayonet cap, and GU-10 only.
